Predictive Processing

The Idea

The brain does not passively receive the world; it predicts it. Hierarchical generative models issue top-down predictions of sensory input (“there’s a dog” predicts fur and four legs predicts these patterns on the retina), and only the errors propagate back up. What you experience is the brain’s current best guess, continuously corrected. Errors are weighted by precision: in fog, visual errors count for little and your priors carry more of the load. Attention, on this story, just is precision weighting.

Action gets folded in through active inference. There are two ways to make a prediction come true: update the model (perception, learning) or change the world (action). Moving your arm is fulfilling a proprioceptive prediction. The ambition is a single principle (minimize prediction error) covering perception, action, learning, and attention, with Bayesian inference as the underlying mathematics.

Why I Keep It

It is the theory of cognition I currently lean on most, and it connects directly to my experiments. Sentence processing is prediction under this frame: anticipatory eye movements, surprisal effects, the jolt when “the cat sat on the ceiling” lands. For multilingual cognition it generates real questions: do L1 and L2 carry different precisions, is code-switching context-dependent precision weighting, is L2 acquisition the building of a better generative model? It is also the bridge between my Bayesian epistemology and the brain: the same updating norm, implemented approximately in cortex.

Tensions

  • Does it explain everything or redescribe everything? A framework that fits any finding fits too easily (the hard-to-vary test bites here).
  • Exact inference is intractable, and the story of how the brain approximates it is still promissory.
  • Direct neural evidence for hierarchical predictive coding is suggestive, not settled.
